Asking if it is okay to give them a hug can foster a sense of understanding and support when you don’t think you know the right thing to say. If someone is at work and trying to not to be emotional, they probably don’t want a hug or talk about their loss in case that brings up the emotions they are trying to control. Briefly touching their arm and saying “I’m so sorry. I am here for you and can talk or meet up after work”, is enough for that moment.

It’s really important to make sure that the person you’re supporting feels like they can talk about their feelings without being judged. You want to create a safe and comfortable place for them to share what they’re going through, where they don’t have to worry about being criticized or made to feel like their emotions are wrong.
